Whether you’re moving house, planning on travelling the world, or you’re simply in need of some overflow storage — storage units are always a handy investment. With this in mind, we understand that not everything going to the storage facility is small in size or easy to manoeuvre.

In fact, many of our customers utilise our storage units to store their bulky belongings, freeing up space in their properties. But, how do you store large equipment in a storage facility safely and effectively? That’s what we’re here to find out.

Is it possible to put large equipment into storage?

Thanks to our different storage unit sizes, it’s more than possible to put large equipment into storage. We recommend that you collate all of your equipment to get a good idea of the size. Once you have this information, you can then choose a storage unit suited to your needs.

What bulky equipment is suitable for storage?

We store a whole variety of belongings at Bluebox Storage. From bulky furniture items to the smallest trinkets, there’s a home for every piece of your property. So, rest assured that your large pieces of equipment will find a safe and secure place in one of our units.

Here’s just an idea of some of the equipment you can store with us:

Sports storage

  • Treadmills
  • Gym accessories
  • Cross trainers
  • Exercise bikes
  • Weightlifting equipment
  • Dumbbells
  • Power racks
  • Rowing machines
  • Step machines

Storage for hobbies

  • Golf equipment
  • Football equipment
  • Climbing equipment
  • Camping equipment
  • Arts and crafts equipment
  • Musical instruments

However, please note that we have a few prohibited items which you will not be able to keep in any of our storage unit locations. These include non-road legal bikes and quad bikes as well as chemicals, explosives, highly flammable goods and unlicensed or hazardous goods. You must also not store perishable food items or any illegal items such as weapons, drugs, or firearms.

Our storage sizes for large pieces of equipment

Our 10ft storage container is comparable to a small garden shed or garage. It’s spacious enough to accommodate furniture and household items, so you’ll be surprised at how much of your bulky equipment you can fit in there, especially if you’d like to store some fishing equipment or your art and craft supplies.

If you have larger pieces of equipment, like the different pieces that make up a home gym for example, then the 20ft storage container may be more suitable for your needs.

Do you have lots of different equipment for a variety of hobbies? Then our 40ft storage container could be the perfect option. This unit is large enough to store the belongings of a 5-bed property.

Rest assured that our shipping containers are designed to be secure and theft-resistant. We even have 24/7 on-site CCTV which is monitored, and you’ll be given your own storage unit lock from us when you rent a storage unit.

To ensure your items are always covered, we offer StoreProtect to all of of our customers.

How to safely put large belongings into storage

Moving large items into a storage unit can be difficult, and it’s important that you stay safe while doing so.

We have a variety of lifting trolleys and an on-site forklift available to assist you with your bulky equipment. It’s also useful that you can drive right up to your designated storage unit for easy access.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when lifting and moving your heavy equipment:

  1. Plan and assess the risks: Before any movement, carefully plan your approach. Assess your equipment's weight and dimensions, and inspect the path to the storage container for any obstacles or risks. If you don’t feel confident, just call on one of our team members who will be more than happy to assist you.
  2. Keep an eye on your balance: It's crucial to maintain your equipment's (and your own!) stability during lifting. Make sure your equipment is secured properly and ensure it’s balanced evenly. Unbalanced loads can lead to dangerous shifts or tipping as you approach your storage container, leading to the risk of injury.
  3. Use proper lifting techniques: When lifting bulky items, always lift with your legs — not your back. Keep your equipment close to your body and lift in a smooth, coordinated effort with a partner to prevent injury.
  4. Keep your communication clear: Constant communication with your partner (whether that be a member of our team or a friend) is key during the move. Use clear, predetermined signals to coordinate movements, especially when navigating tight spaces or when your visibility is limited.
